Our first impression of Riga was positive:
Friendly people, not yet spoiled by mass tourism (read from Finland), relaxed atmosphere, good food to reasonable prices.
Strolling along the narrow streets of the Old Town you can admire beautifully restores buildings from old times and visit small local restaurants of all price levels.

A visit to the Central Market, located in old great Zeppelin hangars is worth while - have a look!

A good place to view Riga is from the spire of St. Peter's Church  in Old Town....

....and a good place to stay is at the Raddisson SAS Daugava Hotel

with complimentary transport to/from airport and hotel/Old town v.v.
The breakfast buffet is superb - I would call it a BRUNCH!
