The Gambia
1999

We visited The Gambia for the first time for one week in March 1999. The sun shines every day in Gambia during wintertime and as the flying time from Scandinavia is not too long, it is a fine place to spend a holiday during winter. We flew from Helsinki to Stockholm by a regular SAS flight and boarded a Ving charter from Arlanda. A comfortable flight by Novair B757 took us directly to Banjul in 8 hours. Distance from Finland 6000km.
We stayed at the African Village in Bakau. A rather small but cozy hotel with a familiar atmosphere. Recommending! Address: Atlantic Road, Bakau, tel (220)496384. Restautant, bar and pool but no beach.
For a first time visitor it is recommended to join one or more of the organized tours. We joined a bicycle safari to the neighbor villages and a fine beach near Bungalow Beach. A "Romantic River Tour" by a pirogue on Gambia River at sunset and a buffet dinner at Lamin Lodge was interesting. To learn something about Gambian history and the export of slaves, it is recommended to visit Juffure, the Kunta Kinte village and James Island from where the slaves in old days were loaded on ships to the USA. This is a whole day tour that can be made onboard m/s Beatrice from Banjul upstream in 3 hours to Juffure.
The Gambia is an interesting country to visit. It is very much different from East Africa and has a touch of a real Black African magic! People say you either like it or you don't. One must be familiar with the Gambian way of thinking and accept the local conditions and culture before one can appreciate this land and the friendly people.

Our personal  views of the Gambia based on the first trip. Our expectations were high - searching for our ideal vacation spot. The country is poor but people very friendly. Criminality low despite high rate of unemployment. Hotels of good standard but outside the hotel area a cultural chock is a fact. The landscapes are not especially breathtaking but views along riverbanks and somewhat inland gives a feeling of the real Black Africa. An eldorado for bird watchers - other animals are few compared to East Africa. We arrived with definite plans to return - but there is a "but" - outside the fenced hotel area especially a newcomer cannot walk without constantly being approached by the unofficial guides, the "bumsters" offering their services and they do not take no thanks for an answer. These boys naturally must try to earn their living somehow - but from the visitor´s point of view this is very FRUSTRATING. For this reason we did not yet find our ideal vacation destination.
